A Perfect Weekend in Verona from Milan — Complete Guide 2026

Milan and Verona are just 55 minutes apart by train. Yet they are two completely different cities — and that is exactly why a weekend in Verona is the perfect escape for anyone living in Milan.

No traffic, no stress. Leave on Friday evening or Saturday morning and find yourself immersed in the historic centre of one of Italy's most beautiful cities.

How to Get from Milan to Verona

🚂 By train — Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains connect Milan Centrale to Verona Porta Nuova in about 55 minutes. Frequent departures throughout the day. Buy tickets at trenitalia.com or italotreno.it

🚗 By car — About 1 hour and 30 minutes on the A4 Milan-Venice motorway. Note: Verona's historic centre is a ZTL (restricted traffic zone). Recommended car parks: Parcheggio Cittadella or Parcheggio Arena.

Our advice is to come by train — you arrive relaxed, walk out of the station and in 10 minutes you are in the heart of the city. No worries about parking.

What to See in Verona Over a Weekend

Verona is a perfectly sized city — the entire historic centre can be comfortably explored on foot in two days.

🏛️ Verona Arena — the first-century Roman amphitheatre is the symbol of the city. From June to September it hosts the famous opera season. Worth visiting even during the day to discover its history.

💑 Juliet's House — Via Cappello 23, the most famous balcony in the world. A must for couples and Shakespeare lovers.

🌿 Piazza Erbe — Verona's oldest market, surrounded by historic palaces and cafes. The perfect spot for breakfast or an aperitivo.

🏰 Castelvecchio and Ponte Scaligero — the medieval Scaligeri castle with its battlemented bridge over the Adige is one of Verona's most photographed views.

🌳 Giardino Giusti — one of the best-preserved Renaissance gardens in Italy, with hedge mazes and a panoramic view over the city.

🗼 Torre dei Lamberti — climb 84 metres to admire Verona from above. The lift makes it accessible for everyone.

🍷 Wine bar in the historic centre — Verona is the capital of Veneto wine. A glass of Amarone, Valpolicella or Soave is a must.

Suggested Itinerary — Two Days in Verona

Day 1 — Arrival and historic centre

Morning — Arrive by train, check in and walk towards the centre. First stop: Piazza Erbe for breakfast and the market.

Lunch — A typical trattoria in the historic centre. We recommend risotto all'Amarone or pasta with donkey ragù, typical Veronese dishes.

Afternoon — Visit the Verona Arena, walk along Corso Porta Borsari, stop at Juliet's House.

Evening — Aperitivo in Piazza Bra with a view of the Arena. Dinner in one of the many trattorias in the centre. If you are in the city during the opera season, this is the perfect evening for a show at the Arena.

Day 2 — Hidden Verona and surroundings

Morning — Visit Castelvecchio and walk across Ponte Scaligero. Climb the Torre dei Lamberti for the panoramic view.

Lunch — Aperitivo and lunch along the Lungadige, the riverside promenade along the Adige.

Afternoon — Giardino Giusti, shopping on Via Mazzini, artisan gelato in the centre.

Late afternoon — Head back to the station and take the train back to Milan.

Day Trip to Lake Garda

Verona is also the ideal starting point for visiting Lake Garda. From Verona Porta Nuova there are direct buses to Peschiera del Garda, Lazise, Bardolino and Sirmione. In about 30-40 minutes you are on the shore of Italy's largest lake.

🚌 ATVO buses: frequent departures from Verona Porta Nuova station.
