Verona and Lake Garda — A One Day Itinerary
Verona is not just a city to discover — it is also the perfect base for a day trip to Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake. Colourful villages, crystal-clear water, medieval castles and palm trees reminiscent of the Mediterranean, all less than an hour from the historic centre.
This guide will help you organise the perfect day between Verona and Lake Garda, without needing a car.
How to Get to Lake Garda from Verona
🚌 By bus — Direct buses to the main lake destinations depart from Verona Porta Nuova station. The journey takes between 30 and 50 minutes depending on the destination.
🚗 By car — About 25-40 minutes on the A4 motorway towards Milan, exit at Peschiera del Garda or Affi-Lago di Garda Sud.
Our advice is to avoid bringing a car if possible — the lake villages are best explored on foot and parking can be difficult during high season.
Places to Visit in One Day
Peschiera del Garda 🏰
The closest to Verona, reachable in about 30 minutes. A fortified village surrounded by Venetian walls, with canals reminiscent of a small Venice. Ideal for a morning walk before continuing to other locations.
Sirmione 💎
One of Garda's gems — a village built on a small peninsula, dominated by the Scaligero Castle that rises directly from the water. Also famous for its natural thermal springs. Don't miss a walk to the tip of the peninsula for a panoramic view of the lake.
Bardolino 🍷
An elegant village famous for producing the red wine of the same name. The lakeside promenade lined with olive trees and historic cafes make it perfect for a relaxing lunch with a lake view.
Lazise 🚣
An ancient fishing village with a picturesque small harbour and well-preserved medieval walls. The colourful houses and narrow alleys offer an authentic atmosphere, away from mass tourism.
Malcesine 🚡
Further away but reachable with a half-day excursion. Famous for its Scaligero Castle and the cable car that climbs up to Monte Baldo, from where you can enjoy a spectacular view over the entire lake.
Suggested Itinerary — A Day at Lake Garda
Morning — Early departure from Verona, first stop at Peschiera del Garda. Walk among the canals and Venetian walls.
Midday — Move to Sirmione, visit the Scaligero Castle and walk along the peninsula.
Lunch — Restaurant with a lake view in Sirmione or Bardolino, try the lake fish and a glass of Bardolino or Lugana.
Afternoon — Bardolino or Lazise, walk along the lakeside promenade, artisan gelato, shopping in local stores.
Evening — Return to Verona in time for dinner in the historic centre.
Practical Tips
🌞 Summer mornings are the best time to visit the villages before the crowds arrive.
⛵ From May to September boats are also available connecting the different lake locations — an original way to move between destinations.
🍦 Every village on Lake Garda has its own artisan gelateria — always worth a sweet stop.
📅 During high season (July and August) buses can get crowded — leaving early in the morning helps avoid the crowds.
